A month has now passed since Oz Comic-Con came to Melbourne. Oz Comic-Con 2016 marked my 3rd time going to a “pop culture convention”, and every time I walk through the doors to one of these things I am overcome with the same feelings that I’m sure all of the amazing cosplayers and dedicated pop culture fans have. I feel excited, liberated, free…and also a little concerned for what my bank balance will be come the end of the day. It is truly a sensory overload.
You can lose yourself in the beautiful art works on display in ‘Artist Alley’, meet and take a photo with celebrities you’ve idolised for years, spend all your earnings on merchandise that you simply ‘must’ have, and find yourself wondering “how is that even possible?” as you admire the incredible effort that the cosplayers have gone to, not just on the day of the con, but in the months leading up to it, as they worked tirelessly on their costumes.
I am totally and completely OBSESSED with cosplayers, and as a photographer I find myself like a little kid in a candy store, not knowing who I want to capture, so many amazing looks! This year I attended both days of the event, held at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, and I was able to introduce my friend Patricia to the worlds of pop culture conventions and cosplay, as I was excitedly snapping shot after shot, she was my eyes on the side, directing me to my next subject “what about him?”, “take her photo too”, “OMG CHEWBACCA!!!”. It was great to see things through her eyes, and to see her experience all the same emotions I have experienced since my very first con.
If you’re considering going to one of these conventions, I say GO FOR IT! It truly is an experience. AMC Expo is coming up in October, so start saving your dollars! One little tip: ask permission to take someone’s photograph, I always ask permission and I have yet to be turned away.
If you’re still not convinced about how wonderful these conventions are, take a look at my photos from the 2 day event below. Don’t you wanna meet Thor? You know you do!
